Skyline students Shelby Redd, 8- to 9-year-old girls division, and Isaiah Pippins, 10- to 11-year-old boys division, were local winners at the Skyline Elks Hoop Shoot Contest held in November.

Both participants advanced to compete in the Elks Missouri State Championships in February in St. Louis by winning their respective divisions at the Lodge Directors Competition held in December in Warsaw and district competition held in January in Clinton.

Redd made 12 of 25 free throws at Skyline, nine of 25 at Warsaw, 15 of 25 at Clinton and 11 of 25 at St. Louis. Pippins made 10 of 25 free throws at Skyline, 15 of 25 at Warsaw, 16 of 25 at Clinton and 17 of 25 at St. Louis.

When asked about what they learned by competing in the hoop shoot, Redd said, “Keep trying and you will improve,” and Pippins said, “Good sportsmanship and have fun.”

When asked what their favorite moment of participating in the Missouri State Championships was, Redd said, “Even if I don’t win, being proud of myself and my efforts,” and Pippins said, “Meeting new people and making new friends.”

Along the way they both earned awards, including certificates, basketballs and Elroy Elk, reminding them to be drug-free.
