Charleen L. Peters, 74, of Asbury, N.J., was born in Phillipsburg, N.J. She died peacefully Aug. 15, 2018, at her daughter’s home in Urbana.

She was raised in Washington and lived in Asbury, N.J., for most of her life. She moved to Urbana in 2004 and retired to Elgin, Texas, in 2016.

She was a home health aide for more than 40 years.

She was known to have rescued a multitude of animals throughout her lifetime. Taking in and caring for abandoned animals brought her great joy. She had a special affinity for dogs and horses. She also loved the outdoors, camping, gardening and attending country music festivals.

In her later years, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in activities, such as motorcycle racing and horseback riding.

Charleen was preceded in death by her father, Howell Mutchler; and her brother, Randy Mutchler.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Raymond “Smoke” Peters, formerly of Asbury, N.J.; her daughter, Candy, and son-in-law, Frank Van Middlesworth, Urbana; her sons: Joe Peters and his significant other, Arlene Golovko, and Dave Peters and his wife, Kathy, all of Asbury, N.J., and Jeff Peters and his wife, Meghan, Elgin, Texas; her mother, Mary Ellen Mutchler; her sister, Mary Margaret Erb, North Carolina; her sister-in-law, Leslie Mutchler, Belvidere, N.J.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins.
