Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, First Baptist church, Macks Creek, under the direction of Hedges Scott Funeral Home, Macks Creek. Burial in Macks Creek Cemetery, Macks Creek. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James Vernon Johnson, 89, Macks Creek, was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Eagle City, Okla., the son of James “Jim” and Sophie (White) Johnson. He died March 25, 2015, at Colonial Springs Healthcare Center, Buffalo.

He served in the Army with CoB 20th Armored Division in France and Germany during World War II.

He returned home in 1946 and married his high school sweetheart Dovie Hicks.

They moved to Kansas City where he spent 30 years working for the Gas Service Company before retiring to Macks Creek where he lived for 28 years.

He enjoyed fishing and also loved turkey hunting which he looked forward to each year and spent many hours on the rivers and lakes fishing. He loved spending time with his two granddaughters on the river and playing games with them.

He spent many hours studying his Bible and working puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edgar and Melvin Ray; and three sisters: Annabelle Jones, Helen Riser and Daisy Tice.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Dovie; two sons: Larry and wife, Deborah Johnson, Tulsa, Okla., and Garry Johnson, Raytown; two granddaughters: Sarah and husband, Justin Christian, and Ashley and husband, Slick Shelley, all of Tulsa, Okla.; two great-grandchildren: Ryder James and Callie Elizabeth Christian; two brothers: Emmett and wife, Cookie Johnson, Camdenton, and Harold and wife, Dorothy Morgan, Preston; and many other family members and friends.
