Service: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Butler Funeral Home, Bolivar. Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at funeral home.

Richard Lee McCarthy of Halfway was born July 9, 1926, in Polk County, the son of Emma Krejci McCarthy and John “Jack” McCarthy. On the morning of Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, he died peacefully.

Richard grew up on the family farm north of Bolivar, and he graduated from Bolivar High School. On May 25, 1946, Richard married Mavis Ballinger, and from this union four sons were born.

Over the years, Richard bought and sold real estate, but his proudest accomplishment was being a lifelong farmer. Throughout his life, Richard was a role model for those who worked beside him, and by his example, he instilled a very strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; 11 brothers and sisters; and his sons, Donnie, Wayne and Charles.

Richard is survived by his wife, Mavis, of the home; one brother, Bob McCarthy and wife Sally of Lompoc, Calif.; one son, Larry McCarthy of Buffalo; one daughter-in-law, Michele McCarthy of Tahlequah, Okla.; his grandchildren, Heather McDaniel Becker and husband Brett of Macks Creek, Amber Abercrombie and husband Jeff of Buffalo, Jeremy McCarthy and wife Kali of Halfway, Brandon McCarthy and wife Leslie of Buffalo, Colt McCarthy and wife Daphne of Austin, Texas, Nocona Williams and husband Tyler of Tahlequah, Okla., Ace McCarthy and wife Jessica, also of Tahlequah, Okla., and Sean McCarthy of Liberty; 17 great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Melissa Ford, who took care of Richard over the past few years.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Butler Funeral Home, Bolivar.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the funeral home with Lloyd Middleton officiating.

Interment will be in Ragsdale Cemetery near Halfway.
