Devin Carroll scores 22 with six 3-pointers
To win a conference road game is often difficult, but the Fair Grove boys managed to do that Friday night with a resounding 70-48 win at Stockton in a Mid-Lakes Conference contest. The Eagles are now 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Devin Carroll had his best game of the year with 22 points, including six 3-pointers -- five in the second half. Fair Grove had two other players score in double figures -- Logan Daniels with 16 and Ryan Berry with 10. Josh Orr added nine, Cody Stacye eight, Jaxon Rowden three and John Yount two.
Daniels led in rebounds with seven, and Carroll had six. Berry led in assists with four. Fair Grove jumped in front 14-7 in the opening quarter and led 32-17 at the half.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, the Eagles had a tough loss at home to Clever, 64-56, in another league matchup. Fair Grove led 16-13 at the quarter, but fell behind 30-26 at the half and 49-40 at the end of the third. The Eagles never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter, finally losing by eight.
It was a big win for the Bluejays, who were 2-5 coming into the contest.
“We’ve been struggling,” said Clever coach Luke Brosius, who formerly coached at Buffalo. “We had to withdraw from the Blue & Gold Tournament because of the COVID-19.”
Fair Grove trailed 11-7 with three and a half minutes remaining in the opening quarter, but the Eagles had a 6-0 run to go ahead by two. Berry was good on a pair of free throws, Kody Stacye hit a shake ‘n bake layup and Carroll had a fast-break layup.
Later, Berry’s traditional 3-point play gave Fair Grove its 16-13 lead at the end of the quarter. At the start of the second quarter Berry had a rebound and putback to extend the Eagles’ led to five, but ultimately the Bluejays scored the last eight points of the quarter and established a 30-26 halftime advantage.
Daniels led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Berry had 13, Stacye eight and Orr seven. Carroll added six, Blake Lewis four and Rowden three. Orr had a big night on the boards with 11 rebounds, and Carroll added six. Berry again led in assists with four.
Bryce Gelle led Clever with 21 points and Grant Pellman added 16.
By a quirk in the schedule, Fair Grove boys don’t play again until they host Springfield Central on Tuesday, Jan. 19. They also will play at home against Conway on Friday, Jan. 22. They will play in the Sparta Tournament Jan. 25-30.
