Paul Barclay

Paul Barclay died peacefully after a full and rewarding life.

He is survived by his daughters, Paula Barclay of Salida, Colorado and Patricia Barclay of Tucson, Arizona; by his former wife, Dorothy Sue Phillips of Powell, Wyoming and brother, Rex (Pete) Barclay of Urbana, Missouri.

At age 16, he hitchhiked to Seattle, Washington and got a job aboard a US Coast and Geodetic Survey ship and traveled around much of the coast of Alaska. He returned the following year to Dallas County to graduate from Tunas High School. He served in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Cobbler from 1950-1953.

In 1958, he married Dorothy Sue Phillips and they moved to Alaska to start their lives and family there.

Paul lived in Alaska for more than 30 years and had many adventures there, some of which are recounted in his book “My Compass Points North.” He returned to Dallas County to live full-time in 1988.

Paul will be remembered for his fearless, adventuring spirit, his irascible sense of humor and his gift of colorful story-telling.
