Lady Tigers top-seeded in district tourney
It’s shocking news these days when the Skyline softball team loses a game, but it happened last week when East Newton’s bats heated up for eight runs in the sixth inning. As a result, the visitors went home with a 9-3 win and held the Lady Tigers to five hits.
East Newton earlier scored a run in the top of the first, and Skyline notched two runs in the second inning and one more in the fifth. Of Skyline’s five hits, only one of them — a double by Angelina Curtis — was for extra bases. Curtis, Grace Edge and Chayla Tuning each had one hit and drove in one run.
Skyline pitcher Jorden Hodges allowed nine runs on 12 hits while striking out four batters and walking one. Only one of the runs was earned as the Lady Tigers committed two errors.
In sharp contrast, the Lady Tigers bombed Tipton 21-1 in a game that lasted only three innings because of the 15-run rule. Skyline scored 14 runs in the second inning to add to four in the first and three in the third. The Lady Tigers whacked 21 hits, and Tipton helped out by committing four errors.
Ella Dougherty and Angelina Curtis each homered as Skyline had 13 extra-base hits. Chayla Tuning and Taylor Hunt each had triples while Angelina Curtis added two doubles and Kalli Eidson, Dougherty, Edge, Hunt, Lexi Curtis and Keelie Holmes each had one double. Tuning and Hunt each had a triple in the contest.
Angelina Curtis was four for four with four runs scored and three driven in; Dougherty was three for four with four runs and four RBI; Edge was three for four with three RBI and two runs scored; Hodges was two for four with two RBI; Hunt was two for three and scored three times; Tuning was two for three with a couple of RBI; Lexie Curtis and Eidson both were one for two; and Abby Hammer was one for one.
Hodges gave up one run on two hits in three innings while fanning three batters and walking one.
Skyline is top-seeded in the Class 2, District 7 Softball Tournament at Fair Grove. The Lady Tigers were scheduled to play Buffalo yesterday (Tuesday) in the semifinals as the Lady Bison downed Fair Grove 13-6 on Monday. The district championship game will be played Thursday at 5 p.m.
