Wins 2 of 4 at Buffalo tournament
Buffalo’s volleyball team played well during the past week, winning three matches and losing three. This included winning two of four matches Saturday at the Buffalo Invitational Tournament, which was won by Springfield Catholic with Bolivar finishing second.
The Lady Bison, now 5-6 on the season, started the week by defeating a good Stockton team on the road. They had to come back from an 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 in five sets. Buffalo lost the first two sets 13-25, 22-25, then came back to win 25-18, 25-17, 15-13.
“Stockton is a good team with some scrappy players that don’t give up,” coach Carmen Smith said. “I am just so pleased we played the same way on the last three sets. We started very slow, but the girls were determined to win and played a tough five-game match.”
Kyra Jacobs led the way with 13 kills, three assists and 12 digs while Brooke Jacobs racked up 28 assists, 10 digs and one kill. Other stats were: Serenity Gann 25 digs; Andrea Brown eight kills and two assists; Elizabeth Western one ace, seven kills and 12 digs; Caity Mankey two aces, two assists and four digs; Caitlyn Dugan one ace, seven kills and five digs; Carley Bills two digs.
At Ash Grove on Thursday the Lady Bison lost 25-21, 10-25, 20-25, 20-25. Brown executed seven kills and Western had 18 digs and three kills. Brooke Jacobs added 15 assists and four digs while Dugan had five kills and Gann had 12 digs.
“We played an outstanding first set against Ash Grove,” Smith said. “They are a very tall team and our girls did not seem to be intimidated by it. We played great defense and that definitely won the first set for us.”
Smith stressed that the Lady Bison made too many unforced errors the second set, but the third and fourth sets were hard-fought battles.
“We just came up a little short,” she said.
Buffalo played four two-set matches in pool play in the Buffalo Tournament, defeating Clever 25-18, 25-22 in the opener. The Lady Bison then lost to two tall and outstanding Springfield teams -- Central and Catholic. The Central scores were 13-25, 14-25 and the loss to Catholic was 10-25, 22-25.
The Lady Bison fought back to edge Houston 28-26, 28-26.
Brooke Jacobs compiled 33 assists and 13 digs in the four matches and Brown added 13 kills and six digs. Western amassed 15 assists and 21 digs and Kyra Jacobs had 11 kills and 18 digs. Dugan had 12 kills and Kaylee Deckard registered 10 digs.
“We had a great tournament with some great teams,” Smith said.
Buffalo was scheduled to host Osage Monday night and will play at home Thursday against Sherwood in a conference match. The Lady Bison hope to avenge their loss at Sherwood in the opening match of the season.
