Lake Conditions
Lake Level: 838.17, 69-72 degrees
Water condition: The lake is currently .83 feet low, up from last week. The watercolor is slightly stained in the upper ends, good visibility in the main lake.
Crappie
Action: Good
The crappie fishing is very good. The water temperature has fallen slightly over the last week. The crappie are still in limbo, stuck between a fall and summer pattern. The bite is very good. The fish are slightly scattered. Brush piles have been the most consistent structure for numbers. As this cool weather continues to trend the crappie will move shallower and get more aggressive.
Pattern: The crappie are congregating around brush in 8-20 feet of water. Most brush piles hold crappie. Casting jigs, letting them fall and slowly reeling them back has been very effective. They have been aggressive in picking up a small jig, 2” jigs are being more productive now, however often they pick it up on the fall – watch your line or pay close attention to weight when you start reeling.
On standing timber in 4-30 feet of water in the mouths of creeks and coves. The most active fish are 8-15 feet deep; however, the deeper trees are still holding fish – they are 15-25 feet deep; they will hit a jig that is swimming past them. Cast your jig past the tree, let it fall and slowly reel it back.
Lures: The fall bit opens the door to a wider variety of styles and profiles. Our best success has been on 1/16 oz head with a Crappie Slammers Mini Split. With bright sun and good visibility in the water The Natural, Okie Shad and Blue Crystal have been great choices; early in the morning before the sun gets high, Pearl White Chartreuse, Midnight Chartreuse, Pink Lemonade and Silver Pepper Glow have been good colors.
