In 2012 the Dallas County R-I School Board of Education established the Dallas County R-I Schools Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame is designed to recognize outstanding alumni, former staff, or exceptional supporters of the Dallas County R-I School District. Nominations for the Hall of Fame may be submitted to the Superintendent of Schools at any time. However, the formal application process will begin in January of each year, with the formal induction ceremony to be held at the Buffalo High School graduation, which is held each May. The official Hall of Fame is located in the lobby of the Shewmaker Center on the Buffalo High School campus.

The YMCA works hard to build community alliances and to offer Dallas County members and others opportunities to pursue physical, mental and spiritual health. Besides the fact that they offer a wide variety of activities throughout the year, the Dallas County Area YMCA, under the leadership of Center Director Dawn Decker, offers several other opportunities for Dallas County residents to share in the abundance of resources available.

Yes, I know, it is not the time of year to be writing about hayrides. But, during a conversation between my sister Carol Ann and I, she told how, when she and Joe Wayne (our older brother) were young, they went on a hayride with snow on the ground. Joe Wayne drove the tractor, and when they got to their destination, or maybe back to our house, they had a wiener roast.

Christmas 2024 marked the fourth year that the Buffalo Community has worked together to bring “tidings of great joy” to the children in the Buffalo area through the Angel Tree. The owners of Xtreme Diesel, Matthew Frye and his wife, Makayla, founded the project in 2021, after reflecting on their own childhoods and realizing they wanted to give back to their community. They put out some feelers to find the need in the community and found there was a great need to help children at Christmas time. Partnering with OACAC, Frye believes that 600-700 children have been served through the Angel Tree since its founding. The program is unique to Buffalo and serves youngsters not served through Toys for Tots. This year, approximately 160 children received gifts from the Angel Tree.

We've all heard of Santa, the jolly old fellow with the white beard and big belly, who wears a red suit. He goes by Santa Claus, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, or St. Nicholas. He's the guy who delivers gifts to every good little boy and girl, all over the world, in one night—one night, mind you.
