Did you know at least one in three Americans live paycheck to paycheck, according to a survey by Bankrate? Many families make minimum wage and barely survive the month without help. It is easy for the public to see the reduced or free school program or The Haven’s diaper and feminine products ministry. However, many don’t realize that some families make due at night without a bed for their children.

Some people figure you can learn about anything on the internet these days, so when Skyline Elementary Head Cook, Amanda Hash, heard her diagnosis, "Hodgkin's lymphoma,” she set about doing her own research to help her doctors heal her body. Included in what she found was a plethora of information echoing Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, who is credited with saying, “Let your food be your medicine.” Hash says, “I believe our bodies can heal themselves if given the nutrient-dense foods we require,” so on top of chemotherapy and radiation, she started scanning nutrient labels and ensuring she and her family ate food with ingredient lists she could read and understand. Some of the things she tries to avoid are flavorings, food dyes, and sugar.

Back in the “Old Days” (about 1985) the new Tiger Tribune staff members at Skyline, along with their teacher, Linda Brown, were excited to take their content to the Buffalo Reflex, lay it out under then-editor, Jim Hamilton, and have it printed like a “real” newspaper. Prior to that, Brown’s husband, Jim Brown, took Skyline’s former newspaper staff to Hermitage to lay it out and print. Around twenty years later, when the school moved back off block scheduling to the more traditional class schedules and they had to add more core classes, the Skyline newspaper went out of print. Last year, it was reintroduced digitally by Sarah Hodges’ creative writing class, and this year, the current staff, with their teacher, Jamie Dampier, is proud to have the Tiger Tribune back into print.
